November is Epilepsy Awareness Month

November 8th, 2021  | News

Epilepsy is the most common diagnosis to come from HIE. It impacts roughly 50-60% of our HIE population, and has a range of impacts -- from more common and more easily treatable seizure disorders, to more aggressive, rare forms.

There's no doubt about it, epilepsy comes with a lot of worry, but there is always hope. There is hope in community, empowerment in learning more about epilepsy, hope in treatments and research, and hope in finding solutions.

This month, we'll be sharing a lot of information and resources for families. Epilepsy looks different across ages with HIE. We want families to be empowered with tools and information, not only if something pops up with their own child, but to know what to do if anyone experiences a seizure.

Seizure first aid training is free and accessible through the Epilepsy Foundation. We think everyone should be trained, but a good place to start is anyone that cares for a child with HIE -- at daycare, at school, in the community, and at home.

Look for published blog posts throughout the month with more information about different types of epilepsy, the connection between HIE and seizures, seizure first aid, what to do if you find someone having a seizure, what to do for follow up after a seizure, and what it might look like further in childhood. We'll also be spotlighting some of the rare epilepsies that HIE babies and children are more at risk for.
